In April 1994 a decree by the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan “On memorializing the memory of D.A. Kunaev” was adopted, which stated that a should be opened in Almaty in recognition of Kunaev and his extraordinary service to Kazakhstan. Thus in November 2001 the D.A Kunaev Museum was established, which opened in January 2002 for the 90th anniversary of Kunaev’s birth.
Collections of family memorabilia, including documents, photographs and videos, portraits and household items, were received from relatives, which served as the basis for the creation of the museum. Later, these were supplemented with contributions from friends and associates of Kunaev.
On 12 January 2012 the memorial apartment-museum was solemnly opened to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding statesmen and public figure, academic, and Thrice Hero of Socialist Labor Dinmukhamed Akhmedovich.
The memorial apartment museum is unique thanks to the authenticity of its exhibits. The museum preserves Kunaev's personal belongings, a library with collections of Russian, Soviet, and foreign classics, books on art and architecture from around the world, numerous valuable gifts from foreign statesmen, presented to him on special occasions, as well as a large collection of lighters.
A noteworthy quality of the museum is the completeness and authenticity of the memorial apartment’s interior. The materials on exhibit offer an idea of what a simple man Dinmukhamed Akhmedovich was, how he lived, rested, and what he enjoyed.
This was yet another step aimed at preserving historical heritage and satisfying public interest in the history of our country, especially in regards to the life and work of Dinmukhamed Akhmedovich and his associates.
