Legal entities and citizens of any state can take part in the activities of the Fund on a voluntary basis. The D.A. Kunaev Foundation constantly cooperates with foundations, international organizations, government agencies and non-governmental associations, educational institutions in different countries of the world.

The D. A. Kunaev Foundation is an international non-governmental, public, non-profit organization. The Foundation was founded by the decision of its founders to achieve social, cultural, charitable, educational, consulting and other goals in accordance with the Civil Code and the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan “On non-profit organizations dated January 16, 2001 No. 142-II.
The main objectives of the fund are:
- Perpetuation of the name of D. A. Kunaev, promotion of his life, work related to the formation of Kazakhstan as an independent state, assistance in strengthening the state sovereignty of the Republic of Kazakhstan, support for political and economic reforms aimed at democratizing society, reviving the historical cultural and spiritual heritage of the Kazakh people;
-creation of the necessary conditions for the formation and development of personality on the basis of national and universal values, the achievement of science and technology, training and education of the younger generation;
- assistance and participation in the development and dissemination of various cultural and scientific research;
- implementation of information and foreign economic activity within the framework of the procedure established by law;
- participation in the financing and logistical support of programs and activities aimed at the development of society, regions of the country, as well as the implementation of other socially beneficial goals provided for by the legislation of the Republic of Kazakhstan;
- assistance in attracting investments for the implementation of priority areas of the Fund's activities by holding scientific and practical conferences, symposiums, meetings, competitions, exhibitions and seminars;
- interaction with other public organizations, associations and foundations, other commercial and non-profit organizations, cooperation with which can help improve the efficiency of the Fund;
- establishment and expansion of relations with foundations and organizations of other countries, development of international contacts.
The concept of the Fund is based on the belief that in the context of globalization in the country and in the world, a new look at one's history, knowledge of it, an increase in the level of education of a modern Kazakhstani as a whole, a new reading of the ideas of progress and humanism, and the development of promising programs in the field of education are needed, as the full-fledged progressive development of society and its progressive movement into the future is impossible without knowledge of its past by this society.
- In 1993, the Foundation adopted the Regulations on the awards of the International D.A. Kunaev Foundation.
- The D.A. Kunaev Prize was established in certain branches of science, technology, literature, art and architecture.
- A scholarship named after D.A. Kunaev was established for the best students of excellent students of metallurgical, mining and economic faculties of higher educational institutions of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
